"Document destruction is just good business, and more to the point in recent years, it's the law."

- Bob Johnson, Executive Director, NAIDS

According to a study released by the FTC in September of 2003, nearly 10 million Americans were the victims of identity theft in the previous year alone. The study also found that businesses in the United States lost $47 billion and consumers lost approximately $5 billion as a result of identity theft during the same period. Identity theft and information-based fraud is the fastest growing crime in the United States.

  • Employees, both past and present, have a legal right to have their personal information protected by shredding it before it is discarded.
  • Casually discarding company information, whether in the form of an individual's personal information or company trade information, shows a callous disregard for customer and shareholder welfare. It exposes customers to the threat of identity theft and other forms of fraud. It also risks your company losing its trade secret protections in court.
  • The courts have demonstrated many times that they will not recognize trade information protections if a company doesn't take every step to protect the information themselves. Casual disposal of information has been the basis for courts to deny trade information rights which otherwise would have been enforceable.
  • The United States Supreme Court has ruled that you forfeit all rights of ownership of casually discarded information.
  • According to Federal Law Enforcement statistics, employees and former employees commit more than 70% of all corporate crimes.
  • Average amount of money spent to clear identity thefts, not including legal fees: $1,495
  • Number of hours victims spent recovering from identity theft: 600

Dunn's Review estimates that corporate espionage casts United States businesses more than $7 billion in losses annually.

The US Department of Justice estimates that an average of 34,000 property crimes which, includes the theft of confidential material, occurs everyday. Those information thefts are caught only 2% of the time and cost businesses an average of $800,000 per instance.
